Clean yet juicy, this Pinot Gris has rich stone fruit flavours and floral undertones. Subtle nuances of spice add gentle complexity and the silky mouth-feel leads to a wholesome finish.
The grapes come from Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, the coolest and driest of all the subregions, which gives unrivalled aroma and flavour intensity. Picked at optimal ripeness, fermented, and then left on yeast lees for several months, the result is an opulent, lush style of Pinot Gris, reminiscent of Alsatian Pinot Gris form Northern France.
4 Stars, Raymond Chan – “Full, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little paler on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented with a fine, taut core of white stonefruits, subtle notes of nuts with hints of minerals. This has a delicate white floral lift adding to the interest. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has restrained flavours of white stonefruits along with hints of nuts and minerals, unfolding subtle floral elements. The palate has good vinous presence and a rounded mouthfeel with a positive core, and fine textures, along with balanced and integrated acidity. Though light in expression, the fruit weight carries to a long finish. This dry Pinot Gris is restrained in fruit expression showing subtle stonefruit, nuts and minerals, on a palate with weight and very good mouthfeel. Serve with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 3 years. Fruit from a coastal site in the Wairau Valley, fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 9.5 g/L RS, the wine aged 4 months on lees. 17.0/20. Jan 2019.”
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
5 Stars Sam Kim, Wine Orbit – “The wine offers lovely ripe fruit notes of apricot, poached pear and mango with nuances of spice and floral. The palate is equally charming, displaying excellent fruit purity and weight, wonderfully supported by silky texture and well pitched acidity. Mouthfilling and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2022.”

Description

Meet the maker

The Hunting Lodge produce beautiful wines from sites across NZ, particularly West Auckland, Marlborough and Central Otago. Their West Auckland spot charmingly tells their story with vines lining the drive as you come in, a lush vege garden off to one side and then a community of buildings surrounding each other.
One of the buildings that stands out is their restaurant and it’s a longstanding symbol of the quality that The Hunting Lodge produce in regards to both their wine and food. It’s a beautiful Villa with character and charm yet simplicity and approachability.
A term you’ll hear a lot around The Hunting Lodge is ‘pasture-to-plate philosophy’ and this involves the team growing as much produce as they can on site to supply their restaurant and sourcing whatever else they need locally.
This ethos carries through to their wines as they have a strong sense of terroir and place due to minimal interventionist winemaking techniques. Personality and uniqueness is therefore in abundance, and this is only emphasised by some of the unique varietals The Hunting Lodge use to produce wines. Lagrein anyone?!
