The quintessence of Central Otago Pinot Noir – powerful and seductive. Hand-reared on the North-facing slopes of Bendigo, one of the warmer sub-regions in Central Otago, the semi-continental climate and free-draining silt and gravel soils produce vivid and concentrated flavours. This is a wine with broad shoulders yet soft hands that have laid out a fruit feast. You will be greeted with black cherry, red plum and vanilla bean on the nose. Ripe boysenberry and cream flavours adorn a rich and rounded mid-palate that finishes with subtle notes of cocoa and cloves. The oak is restrained, and the tannins assert their presence but are soft and inviting. A complex fruit bomb with a serious demeanour and silky, svelte structure.

A stylish rendition; the beautifully lifted bouquet shows dark cherry, spiced plum, thyme, dark mushroom and black olive characters. The palate offers excellent concentration and bright fruit intensity, elegantly framed by fine texture and polished tannins. The wine displays graceful mouthfeel and complex flavours, finishing persistent and savoury. At its best: 2019 to 2023.”

Meet the maker

The Hunting Lodge produce beautiful wines from sites across NZ, particularly West Auckland, Marlborough and Central Otago. Their West Auckland spot charmingly tells their story with vines lining the drive as you come in, a lush vege garden off to one side and then a community of buildings surrounding each other.
One of the buildings that stands out is their restaurant and it’s a longstanding symbol of the quality that The Hunting Lodge produce in regards to both their wine and food. It’s a beautiful Villa with character and charm yet simplicity and approachability.
A term you’ll hear a lot around The Hunting Lodge is ‘pasture-to-plate philosophy’ and this involves the team growing as much produce as they can on site to supply their restaurant and sourcing whatever else they need locally.
This ethos carries through to their wines as they have a strong sense of terroir and place due to minimal interventionist winemaking techniques. Personality and uniqueness is therefore in abundance, and this is only emphasised by some of the unique varietals The Hunting Lodge use to produce wines. Lagrein anyone?!
