Masseria Borgo dei Trulli was created to bring together small growers and wineries from throughout Italy – the ultimate goal, to create wines from local grapes that are most typical of the region in which they are grown. The estate was named after the traditional Apulian stone huts, Trulli, and this expression in particular is made from 100% Primitivo, which is synonymous with the region of Puglia. A mixture of traditional and modern winemaking is used, with fermentation in stainless steel and then ageing in a mixture of French and American oak for approximately 8 months. The result – a wine rich in coffee, fruit, dried herbs and spice, its powerful but also very well balanced. – Wine Central Tasting Panel
On the ‘heel of Italy’s boot’, in the Salento region of Puglia, lies Masseria Borgo dei Trulli, an Orion Wines estate. Home to dark, thick-skinned black grape varieties, the focus here is primarily on indigenous varieties and interesting production methods, like the red grape Negroamaro – known in the local dialect as ‘niuri maru’, meaning black and bitter – and the appasimento style Primitivo, an air drying process that concentrates the flavours of this intensely fruity variety.
